That time of year has come around once again for the cream of the crop to be acknowledged by their peers in the movie world as THE premiere awards ceremony today announced the nominations for the 84th annual Academy Awards.

From the list announced today, there are no surprises that the The Artist has received 10 nominations including Best Picture and Best Actor, however it is Martin Scorsese’s Hugo that leads the field with 11 nominations. Outside of these two heavyweight movies there are a multitude of nominations for movies such as Moneyball, The Descendants, The Iron Lady, and Warhorse.

Beyond these big name Oscar orientated movies there are a few surprise nominations for movies such as Bridesmaids, Tinker Tailor Solider Spy, Margin Call, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and The Muppet’s all being featured in one or more categories.

This year is a very interesting year for the movies that have been nominated, as it feels very wide open for who could win which award in which category on the night.

Keep watching out for the NerdVice team’s Oscar challenge, as some contributors to the site will look to make their selections of the for who will win what on the 23rd February at the Kodak theater in Los Angeles .
