The video games industry is a scary place. Therefore, it stands to reason that it can produce some scary people. Gone are the days when game devs hid away in their coding caves rarely seeing the light of day. In contemporary times, those who design and make video games are often celebrities in their own right, their faces known to people across the globe… and these faces can get up to some pretty disturbing stuff.
Don’t believe me? You soon will (and beware, for below you will find the stuff of nightmares).
- CliffyB
Clifford Michael “Cliff” Bleszinski is the design director for Epic Games, primarily known for his involvement in such franchises as Unreal, Gears of War and, if you’re going to go back in time a little, Jazz Jackrabbit. In this photo you can seen the bleached blonde degenerate attempting to consume a defenceless Labrador puppy; OH THE HUMANITY!
- Will Wright
The supreme overlord of sim games, having produced the likes of SimCity, The Sims and Spore. There’s just something about this particular picture that is strangely sinister, almost as if he’s a Bond villain about send a henchman to his doom for disappointing him. Also he does look a teensy bit like the Grinch here…
- Hideo Kojima
Hideo Kojima has held a number of prestigious positions at Konami in his time, but is currently director of the imaginatively named Kojima Productions. However, he is probably best known for his work on the Metal Gear series. This particular photo makes Kojima look like he is plotting the most evil plot in the history of plotting. Also OH SHIT, HE’S GENDO IKARI.
- Reggie Fils-Aime
Although admittedly not an actual game dev, Reggie Fils-Aime is definitely worth a mention. He is currently the president and chief operating officer of Nintendo of America, and set the tone for his public persona at E3 2004 by introducing himself as follows: “My name is Reggie. I’m about kickin’ ass, I’m about takin’ names, and we’re about makin’ games.” Indeed, Mr Fils-Aime. These days he is perhaps best known for being the originator of the “my body is ready” meme, these words usually accompanying the rather disturbing picture seen below (you can find a video of this historic statement being made at E3 2007 here). So, is yours ready?
- Gabe Newell
Gabe worked for Microsoft and id Software before opening Valve in 1996 with co-founder Mike Harrington. He’s been the butt of many a joke over the years, primarily due to his size and occasionally eccentric behaviour. However, nothing can prepare you for the image below. There are few things as terrifying as the Gabe Glare, as I like to call it, and when I encountered it for the first time in Portal 2 – The Final Hours I did actually physically recoil from my PC monitor in fear.
