As the ever-present demise of a once great city-building game lay on the horizon, Banished looks to fill the hole left in the hearts of many. If you have no clue what I am talking about, I am referencing the steep, online-only downfall of SimCity. With saves being lost, simulation-breaking bugs galore, and a large lack of balance, SimCity just hasn’t lived up to what it could have been. If any game should be labelled as banished, SimCity would definitely seem fitting.
Banished is a city-building strategy game, currently being developed by Shining Rock Software, which is shaping up to be a fantastic game. From what I have seen so far, it very much seems like a nice mixture of SimCity, and a more resource-oriented Age of Empires. It should be noted, however, that the developer has not completely ruled out making combat an addition to the game in the future. Everything from building houses and farming crops, to surviving the cold winters and providing an education to your village are included in Banished. The developer, a one man show of sorts, has stated that the game should be out in mid to late 2013, with a tentative release window of summer 2013.
The game has only been shown in an “alpha” state, but it manages to appear more refined than many finished games. This could simply be because the developer understands the proper use of the terms alpha and beta, with regards to video game development, or possibly because he has been working on the game for two years. Either way the game is looking great, and, judging by the developer’s blog, work is not slowing down any time soon.
